How it looks carved and lit. Print gives you the stencil.
Pirate Pumpkin
An eye patch, a squinty eye and a crooked grin with a missing tooth. Arr!
How to carve it
- Print the stencil and trim the paper close to the pumpkin outline.
- Cut a lid (or a hole in the bottom) and scoop out the seeds. Scrape the front wall down to about 1 inch thick.
- Tape the stencil onto the pumpkin. Poke along every line with a pushpin, a dot every few millimeters, then peel the paper off.
- Cut out the black areas with a small serrated carving saw. Start at the middle of the design and work outward.
- For gray areas, peel away just the orange skin with a loop tool or vegetable peeler. Don't cut through. They'll glow softly.
Kids can poke the dots and scoop. Leave the cutting to grown-ups. A battery tea light is safer than a candle.
